Utah’s Blue Ribbon Trout fishery, the Green River begins under Flaming Gorge Dam; so named in 1869 by Major John Wesley Powell whilst mapping the Green and Colorado Rivers. The dam and reservoir built in the 1960s for power generation and water is what filters the silt from the normally turbid river and keeps the water cool through the hot summers. For management purposes the Trout fishery below the Dam is divided into three sections, the A (7.2 miles) beginning at the dam and finishing at Little Hole, the B (9 miles) Little Hole down to Indian Creek Crossing and the C (15 miles) Indian Crossing through to the Swinging Bridge. The river is primarily a Brown Trout fishery followed in declining order by Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout and Cutthroat Trout. The final two species have not been stocked since the 1990’s though will be located in feeder creeks.

Nice Brown on a Hopper

Nice Brown
Hungry Brown Takes Yellow Hopper

I caught this nice Brown on the Green River in Utah minutes before we pulled the drift boat out at the launch in the background. The day started out calm and very little wind, we were able to hook into some fish on the Triple Double pattern. Once the wind picked up shortly before noon we moved to nymphing with WD 40s. Finally the wind dies down and we switched back to hoppers.
